Barker McCurry Runs Personal Best At Boise State Twilight
Boise Idaho, May 2— Andrija Barker-McCurry contested her only 1500m of the season and came away with a 10 second personal best. She raced well off the fast pace, moved up throughout the race, and closed well. She was happy with her race, but felt there were a few more seconds if she hadn’t hesitated with 600m left in the race.
Haas Runs At Western Washing Twilight Meet
Bellingham Washington, April 25— Jacob Haas wrapped up his track season with a 5000m at the Western Washington Twilight meet. The race was strung out early to due to a fast early pace, and he finished 5th in 15:14. Overall Jacob had a good track season as he set new personal bests at 3000m and 5000m
Williams Runs In Oregon Relays
Eugene Oregon, April 25— Sean Williams was able to compete in 1500m B section of the Oregon Relays. The pace went out slow and he was in good position going into the bell. However, he made the mistake of moving onto the rail and wound up boxed in. He finished 7th in the race in 3:56.91.
Haas Competes In Vancouver Sun Run
Vancouver BC, April 20— Jacob Haas competed in the Vancouver Sun Run over the weekend, the 2nd largest 10k in the world with over 60,000 competitors. The course is challenging as it start’s on a downhill grade and is mostly flat for the first half, before becoming hilly for the last 5k. Jacob got out well going through the mile in 4:48 and 3k in 9:12 before the hills got him. He was able to hold on to finish 36th in 32:48.
Crowl Wins Robie Creek Half Marathon
Boise Idaho, April 19— Brian Crowl became the third member of the Eastside Track Club to win the Race To Robie Creek half marathon. The course climbs for the first nine miles then descends back into town. Crowl’s winning time was 1:19:55, 36 seconds in front of the second place finisher. Eastsiders Patrick Connor and Chris Anton also competed in the race. Connor finished 14th in 1:27:33, while Anton finished 19th in 1:2915. Anton also finished 2nd in the 45-49 age group. Previous Eastsiders to win the race were Pat McCurry and Amy Robillard.
Barker-McCurry, Jones Finish 1 - 2 At Western Oregon Twilight
Monmouth Oregon, April 18— Andrija Barker-McCurry and Kelsey Jones battle cool and windy conditions to sweep the top spots in the 5000m at the Western Oregon Twilight Meet. The two athletes worked together by alternating pacing duties to real in the early leader and pull away from the field. Temperatures in the upper 30’s made the pace erratic, however they raced well. Barker-McCurry won the race in 17:31 with Jones close behind.
Crowl Wins Barking Spider Trail Bash
Murphy Idaho, April 12— Brain Crowl went to the Barking Spider Trail Bash 10 Miler looking to defend his title from last year. However, he knew it would be a difficult task with a former World Championships competitor in the field. The went out conservative on the hilly course as they were able to carry on a conversation in the early going. Crowl was able to pull away in the second half of the race to win in 1:05.50, more than a minute ahead of second place.
McCurry, Williams Compete In Chico State Distance Carnival
Chico California, April 11— Pat McCurry and Sean Williams journey to Chico California to compete in the 5000m at the Chico Distance Carnival. The race went out a little erratic and slowed after the rabbit stepped off the track, but it set up a good finish. McCurry made a strong move off the slow pace with 1000m left and nearly held the lead to the end as he finished 2nd in 14:46.01. Williams struggled early, but the slow pace allowed him to keep a close distance with the lead pack. He raced well over the second half to pick off the runner who fell off the lead pack. He finished 5th in 14:52.94.
Edwards Finishes 3rd in Race For The Roses
Portland Oregon, April 6— Eastsider Shannon Edwards competed in the Race For The Roses Half Marathon in Portland. She ran conservatively due to recent back issues, but finished 3rd on the hilly course in 1:27:31. The race was won by an Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier. Her next race will be a trail half marathon in Central Oregon.
Eastside Track Club Well Represented At Willamette Invite
Salem Oregon, April 4-5— Four members of the Eastside Track Club battled chilly, windy, and rainy conditions and competed well at the Willamette Invitational. Andrija Barker-McCurry, Kelsey Jones, Jacob Haas, and Sean Williams competed in the celebration of distance on Friday night. Williams competed on Saturday as well. Barker-McCurry and Jones competed in the 5000m, and both finished in the top 10. Barker-McCurry got out in good position and closed well over the second half of the race to finish 5th and run a personal best of 17:18.88. Jones went out with the leaders and pushed the paced early before fading some over the final mile. She held on to finish 9th in 17:33.37. Haas competed in the men’s 5000 run. Similar to Jones he went out on a quick pace. He faded some in the middle, but it paid off in the end with a new personal best of 14:59.91. It was his first 5000m under 15:00. Williams ran in the 1500m on Friday night and the 800m on Saturday. 1n the 1500m after a slow start he took the lead in attempt to set an honest pace. After leading for over 600m he was unable to match the fast finish as he slipped to 7th in 4:00.11. In the 800m he was moving well and making up ground on the leaders before struggling in the final 100m to finish 3rd in his heat and 10th overall in 2:00.24.
Bortz Finishes 2nd At EOU Mini Meet, Williams Competes At Oregon Preview
La Grande Oregon, March 21— Dirk Bortz made his Eastside Track Club debut competing in the Hammer Throw at the EOU Mini Meet. He threw well in his first competition after an injury finishing 2nd with a throw of 175-11, a good early season mark.
Eugene Oregon, March 22— Sean Williams kicked of his outdoor track season by competing in the 1500m at the Oregon Preview Meet. He was able to handle the quick pace early, before fading over the final 500m to finish 9th in 3:55.23. He was hoping to run faster, but quick start was a good experience that should pay off later in the season.
Next up a large group of athletes will be competing in the Willamette Invitation April 4-5, including; Bortz, Williams, Jacob Haas, Kelsey Jones, and Andrija Barker-McCurry.
Spring Races In Full Bloom With Four Eastsiders In Action
March 15
Boise, Idaho— Mike Anderson and Brian Crowl returned to action competing in the annual Basic 5, a five mile road race in Boise Idaho. Both athletes competed well, Anderson won in 26:12 while Crowl was third in 27:16. Anderson took the lead shortly after the mile pulled away finishing 25 seconds ahead of second place.
Nampa, Idaho— Andrija Barker-McCurry took part in the NNU open track meet, kicking off her outdoor racing season, season competing in the 3000m. Conditions were cool and windy, however she took charge of the race 400 meters in and never looked back. Running away from the field to win the race in 10:26, just off her personal best set during the indoor track season.
Portland, Oregon— Shannon Edwards opened her 2008 racing schedule competing in the annual Shamrock Run in Portland, taking on the 8k distance finishing 5th in 31:15. The course was challenging with a hilly first half, but she was able to stay controlled and work the downhill on the second half of the race. She finished thinking she had not made the top 5 in the race. From her own account when the official told her she was fifth, she was so elated she grabbed his hand and started dancing.
Eastside Track Club Has Busy Weekend Across The Country
March 8
Boise Idaho— Brian Crowl got his 2008 racing season off to a good start finishing 3rd in the Les Bois 10k Trail Run in 35:37. The difficult out and back course on dirt roads and trails with water crossings; with the first half of the race up hill. Brian went out conservative on the uphill reaching the top in 20:03 and made the return trip in 15:44 with the last 2 miles both under 5:00.
Vancouver Canada— Jacob Haas ran his first race as a member of the Eastside Track Club competing in the Harry’s Spring Runoff 8k in Vancouver BC. He went out conservative, as the first 8k was hilly, and moved up throughout the race. Working with another runner, they caught sixth place by 5k. With 300m left he pulled away from the group to finish 6th, missing a $100 payout by one spot. However, he won his age group and received a $100 gift card to the local running store.
Seattle Washington— Sean Williams travelled to Seattle to compete in the University of Washington Last Chance Qualifier and looking to run a fast 3000m. He didn’t run as well as he was hoping to, but finished 6th in 8:28.
Ft Myers Beach Florida, March 8— Lindsey picked up another win on the roads in Southwest Florida over the weekend at the Shrimp Fest 5k in Ft. Myers Beach. The race, climbs the bridge that is the highest point in Lee County, twice. Conditions were windy, especially on the bridge, but was able to fight through to finish in 18:55.
Anderson Finishes Third At Snake River Half Marathon
Lewiston Idaho, March 1— Mike Anderson battled windy conditions to finish third in the Snake River Canyon Half Marathon in 1:14:40. Conditions were challenging on the out and back course, particularly on the return trip as wind ripped through the canyon with gusts that could stop a runner in their tracks. This was Mike’s first race since July, as he prepares for the upcoming Eugene Marathon in May.
Ulrich Wins Swamp Stomp 5k
Labelle Florida, February 24— Eastsider Lindsey Ulrich continued her road racing circuit in Southern Florida. The stop this weekend was in Labelle for the Swamp Stomp 5k and Armadillo races. She was able to get out more reserved and relaxed than her race the previous weekend and went on to win the race in 18:34. It was a good day for Lindsey as she also placed winning best on the Armadillo races.
Jones Runs 3000m At UW Open Meet
Seattle Washington, February 17— Kelsey Jones traveled to Seattle for the second time this indoor season to compete at the University of Washington. She finished 3rd in the 3000m race in 10:00.55. Recent weather issues has not allowed her to run on a track in over a month, however she was just off her personal best set in her first race in Seattle last month.
Ulrich Competes In Edison Festival Of Light 5k
Fort Myers Florida, February 16— Lindsey Ulrich was in action over the weekend competing in the Edison Festival of Light 5k in Fort Myers Florida. Trying to hang on to a fast early pace, she got a side stitch in the middle of the race but was able to hold on to win her age group and finish 8th in 18:51. In her words, “I went out like an idiot...but I toughed it out.”
Puzey Competes At University of Idaho
Moscow Idaho, February 9— Eastsider Jake Puzey opened his racing schedule for 2008 with a 5000m at the McDonalds Open hosted by the University of Idaho. He put himself in the mix early despite the fast early pace, and lead the race shortly after the first mile before fading to finish 9th. His time was 15:37.89. The race was intended to be a tune up for the Great Aloha run in Hawaii the next week, however a family illness cancelled the trip.
Three Eastsiders Compete In The United Heritage Invitational
Nampa Idaho, February 1 & 2— Three members of the Eastside Track Club competed in the United Heritage Invitational hosted by Boise State. Andrija Barker-McCurry and Sean Williams competed in the 3000m run on Friday night and Kelsey Jones contested the mile run on Saturday. Barker-McCurry closed well over the second half of the race to finish 4th in 10:25, just six seconds off her best time. In the men’s race Williams reluctantly lead the first half of the race. However, he was unable to cover the decisive move and finished 2nd in 8:40. In the women’s mile Jones fell victim to the race tactics. After a slow first 400m the leaders sped up dramatically. She went with them as long as she could, but was unable to hang on the last 400m finishing 5th in 5:13.
Jones, Barker-McCurry Run Personal Bests At UW
Seattle Washington, January 19— Eastsiders Kelsey Jones and Andrija Barker-McCurry journeyed to Seattle to compete in the UW Preview meet. Both athletes competed well and ran personal bests in the 3000m race. Jones finished 8th in the field of 54 in 9:59.12, while Barker-McCurry finished 14th in 10:19.64. According to Jones, it was good race with room for improvement.
McGladrey Wins Capital Mile
Salem Oregon, January 1— Alex McGladrey got 2008 off to a good start winning the annual New Year’s Day Capital Mile in Salem. Despite icy conditions he won the race by nearly 30 seconds despite icy conditions on the out and back course. His winning time was 4:40, which included coming to a complete stop in the middle of the race to successfully navigate the turn around.
Jones Wins YMCA Christmas Run
Boise Idaho, December 22— Eastsider Kelsey Jones competed in the 20th annual YMCA Christmas Run in Boise Idaho. She won the 6.1 mile race in 35:15. The course is challenging, as it starts with a 1.5 mile climb then has a steep down hill back into town for the finish. She also won this race in 2005.
Ulrich Second In Scholarship 4 Miler
Florida, December 15— Lindsey Ulrich was in action competing in the Scholarship 4 Miler in Florida. It was a warm and humid day as she finished 2nd in 24:25, which was good for the conditons. According to Lindsey, it was a great race, as she split 6:06 for each mile.
Eastsiders Get An Early Start To Indoor Track Season
Nampa Idaho, December 1— Three members of the Eastside Track Club kicked off the Indoor Track season at the Jackson Indoor meet. Kelsey Jones won the women’s 3000m in 10:19. She used a big move just after the mile to put a gap on the field. She was then able to respond and hold off a challenger late in the race. On the men’s side Rusty McRea and Andy Peters finshed 3rd and 4th in the men’s 3000m. Both finished in 8:51, which was also a personal best for both.
Gall, Anton Compete in Cal International Marathon
Sacramento California, December 1— Eastsiders Ben Gall and Chris Anton journey to Sacramento to compete in the California International Marathon. Gall finished 25th overall 2:38. Anton got through 20 miles in 2:06, chasing a big personal best. He struggled some over the last 10k, but was able to hold on and run 2:50, which is a personal best.
Five Eastsiders In Action On Thanksgiving Day
Five members of the Eastside Track Club competed in three Thanksgiving Day races in two states. Lindsey Ulrich got the day kicked off in Tampa Florida as one of 10,000 runners in three different races. Opting for the 10k, she utilized a conservative start hoping to bring back the top runners by the end. Running in third most of the race, her plan was working as she was gaining the runner in second with a mile to go. However an overzealous cheering section tipped the her off that Lindsey was gaining ground, and she was unable to catch up. She went on to finish third in 39:05. Next up Pat McCurry, Andrija Barker-McCurry, and Kelsey Jones competed in the Turkey Trot in Ontario, Oregon, braved the 20 degree temperatures, and swept the top spots. Pat McCurry defended his title in the mens division taking the top honor in 15:43. On the women’s side Jones and Barker-McCurry swept the top two spots. Jones finished first in 17:36, with Barker-McCurry close behind in 17:47. Sean Williams was the final Eastsider in action competing in the Turkey Stuffer 5k in Springfield, Oregon. Similar to Ontario is was a cool day with the temperature at 30 degrees and the air was moist as the fog lifted shortly before the start. He took over pacing duties around 3/4 of a mile and quickly dropped all but one other runner, former US 1500m champion Andy Downin. He continued to push the pace, however he was unable to pull away and the race came down a sprint in the last 30m. Williams finished half a second out of first, as both athletes were timed in 15:16.
Crowl Wins Half Marathon, Perry Second
Boise Idaho, October 27— Eastsiders Brian Crowl and Jake Perry competed in the inaugural Prison Break Half Marathon, which is a fundraiser for the Idaho Peace Officer Memorial Fund. Crowl and Perry worked together throughout the race and brining back the early leader. Crowl used a strong move into the wind just after mile 12 to pull away finishing in 1:18:50. Perry was eleven seconds back in 1:19:01, with third place at 1:19:12. Between the 5k, 10k, and Half Marathon the race attracted over 500 participants in its first year.
Williams Finishes 11th At OSU Beaver Classic
Corvallis Oregon, October 20— Sean Williams entered the OSU Beaver Classic looking to improve upon his runner up finish from a year ago. The course was extremely muddy from 3 weeks of rain, and it was not meant to be as he slipped in the mud about 400m in and was unable to real in the lead pack made up of athletes from the University of Oregon. He was able to real in stragglers who fell of the pace to finish 11th in 25:05. |
